Does anyone play the handheld Mario Karts often? If so, how are they?

I have played some Mario Kart 7 in multiplayer mode, it's different than console racing because of the controls. I prefer a stick to steer with.
Mario Kart World Tour looks cool but not easy to play on your phone.
